Purpose of the Role: Provide technical guidance on underground directional drilling, ensuring adherence to specifications, safety standards, and cost management. Implement drilling strategies, manage equipment, and ensure legal compliance while optimizing operational capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Guidance and Compliance:
    • Offer technical input on all drilling-related matters.
    • Ensure adherence to technical specifications and legal compliance.
    • Implement and manage underground directional drilling strategies and equipment.
  2. Safety and Environmental Management:
    • Develop and maintain operational policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
    • Set and achieve safety, health, and environmental targets.
    • Communicate effectively with contractors and suppliers regarding safety and operational standards.
  3. Operational Optimization:
    • Optimize operational capabilities and assets by improving standards.
    • Support the implementation of new drilling methods and technologies.
    • Research, identify, and implement best practices in underground directional drilling.
  4. Reporting and Documentation:
    • Prepare and submit all underground directional drilling reports in a timely manner.
    • Conduct trend analysis, incident investigations, and report findings.
    • Prepare documentation and write reports for management detailing causes and solutions.
  5. Audits and Compliance:
    • Perform audits to identify system and process failures.
    • Assist with accident and incident investigations.
    • Maintain effective cost control and people management.
  6. Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay updated with advancements in underground directional drilling.
    • Attend conferences, courses, and seminars to exchange insights.
    • Align business unit standards with Thungela Resources standards and best practices.
  7. Stakeholder Management:
    • Ensure effective communication and management with stakeholders.
    • Disseminate best practices, technologies, and equipment to relevant parties.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Grade 12 with Mathematics.
    • Millwright or Electronic Mechanician trade.
    • Certificate: “DGS” Refresher Training Course.
    • National Certificate in Mining Operations: Underground Coal: Blasting Operations (Preferred).
    • Certificate in Flame Proof and Gas Testing for Supervisors.
    • “SLP” Safety Leadership Programme Certificate.
    • Certificate in Testing of the Monitech Guardian Methane System.
    • Safety Course A2 Certificate.
    • Competent A & B Certificate.
  • Experience:
    • Extensive experience in Underground Coal Mining.
    • Proven experience in drilling and blasting.
    • Proficient in data analysis and reporting for underground directional drilling.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Strong understanding of mining legislation (Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act, Environmental Legislation, Basic Conditions of Employment, Labour Relations Act).
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Thungela Resources’ core value chain and operational codes of practice.
    • In-depth knowledge of underground mining operations and best practices.
    • Awareness of new technologies in the mining industry.
    • Basic understanding of geology and mine planning principles.
