Job Purpose: The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the production process to achieve targets efficiently and cost-effectively. This includes optimizing production processes, ensuring product quality, managing the factory operations, leading the staff, and maintaining health and safety standards.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Production:
    • Manage the production process to achieve targets efficiently and cost-effectively.
    • Optimize production processes, reduce waste, and minimize downtime.
    • Set goals, objectives, and standards of measurement for the factory.
    • Ensure on-time delivery of products (OTIF) and maintain communication with planning teams.
  2. Quality Control:
    • Ensure that products manufactured meet required quality standards.
    • Monitor and maintain quality control measures throughout the production process.
    • Address and resolve any quality issues promptly.
  3. Plant Management:
    • Oversee day-to-day operations of the factory.
    • Manage inventory, schedule maintenance and repairs, and ensure all equipment is functioning optimally.
  4. Staff Management:
    • Lead and manage the team of factory employees.
    • Ensure staff is trained, motivated, and working efficiently.
    • Provide regular feedback and coaching to ensure effective team performance.
    • Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork and high performance.
  5. Health and Safety:
    • Implement and maintain safety protocols and procedures.
    • Conduct safety audits and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.
  6. General:
    • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including senior management, customers, suppliers, other departments, Bargaining Councils, and Trade Unions.
    • Report on factory progress, achievements, challenges, and opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Grade 12.
    • Relevant Diploma/Degree in Engineering or Production/Operations Management is advantageous.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 5 years in a management role.

Functional Requirements:

  • Sound understanding of the production process and application of continuous improvement processes.
  • Strong focus on delivering results and problem-solving.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent people management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Works in a fast-paced environment requiring considerable multitasking.
  • Shift work may be necessary due to operational requirements.
  • Must have own transport and a valid driver’s license.
