Job Summary: The Senior Linux Engineer will provide technical leadership, team mentoring, and proactive guidance to ensure smooth operations in managed services. The ideal candidate will have a solid technical background in Linux/Unix system administration and possess strong problem-solving skills to address complex issues. This role will focus on automation, process optimization, security hardening, and technical decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Leadership & Mentoring:
    • Proactively guide and mentor junior team members on technical issues and processes.
    • Lead technical decision-making in the areas of system architecture, OS security, and automation initiatives.
    • Equip the team with knowledge sharing, promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
  2. System Administration & Security:
    • Oversee enterprise-scale Unix/Linux environments, ensuring optimal performance, security, and availability.
    • Drive OS security hardening and ensure compliance with security policies and standards.
    • Lead vulnerability and patch management activities across systems.
    • Handle backups, recovery, and resolve service-affecting incidents, including Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  3. Project Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Contribute to architectural planning and lead initiatives or projects to completion.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical efforts with organizational objectives.
    • Manage change and incident resolutions in a structured ITIL-driven environment.
    • Maintain efficiency in support services through continuous monitoring and improvements.
  4. Automation & Scripting:
    • Lead the implementation of automation processes using Ansible and other tools to improve system efficiency.
    • Utilize advanced shell scripting for process automation and systems integration.
    • Manage Red Hat Satellite and oversee Red Hat OpenShift Enterprise projects.

Technical Competencies:

  • 15+ years of experience in ICT, with at least 10 years of Unix/Linux system administration.
  • Experience in managing enterprise-scale Unix/Linux environments.
  • Proficiency in advanced shell scripting and Ansible automation.
  • Knowledge of Red Hat Satellite and cluster environments (Veritas and Pacemaker).
  • Experience in multi-vendor network management port configurations (HP ILO, SUN ILOM, Dell iDrac).
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and change management systems (BMC Remedy).
  • Experience with vulnerability and patch management.
  • Experience in AWS Cloud environments (Advantageous).
  • Backup and recovery management.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Maths & Science (Required).
  • Tertiary qualification in IT technical field (Required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (Advantageous).
  • RHCSA/RHCE or equivalent certification in Unix/Linux environments.
  • ITIL Foundation certification (Advantageous).
