A retail CV should show how you help customers and support a store’s daily work. Customer communication, replenishment, product organisation and accurate transactions are useful details when they reflect tasks you have actually done.
What to include
Separate customer service from till experience. Being friendly does not mean you have operated a point-of-sale system. If you have helped at a market stall, school event or community sale, describe that setting accurately. Mention a till system or cash-handling responsibility only when you used it yourself.
Profile example to adapt
Retail applicant with experience in [shop, stall, volunteering or relevant activity]. Developed [specific customer or stock skill] by [brief true example]. Interested in a [target role] opportunity in [location].
Replace the bracketed text with true details. Remove any sentence that does not describe your experience.
Skills to consider
Choose the skills you can demonstrate. This list is a prompt, not a claim that you hold every skill.
- Customer communication
- Shelf replenishment
- Stock counting
- Product presentation
- Point-of-sale operation, if experienced
Examples of duties or activities
Use only examples that match something you have actually done. Add the setting and dates in the relevant section.
- Helped customers locate [products] and directed questions outside my responsibility to a colleague.
- Replenished [section] and checked that shelf labels matched the products displayed.
- Counted [stock] during [activity] and recorded differences for the team to check.
Check before applying
- Identify your actual customer-facing setting, even if it was informal or voluntary.
- State what you did with stock: counted, unpacked, labelled or replenished.
- Use a real sales or accuracy figure only if you can support it.
- For a first job, use a truthful example of teamwork rather than inventing shop employment.
