What is SASSA and Who Can Apply?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government agency responsible for managing and distributing social grants to eligible South African citizens and permanent residents. SASSA grants are designed to provide financial support to vulnerable groups including the elderly, people with disabilities, children, and unemployed individuals who meet the means test requirements.

To qualify for most SASSA grants you must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, not be receiving any other social grant, not be cared for in a state institution, and meet the income and asset means test set by the Department of Social Development.

How to Apply for a SASSA Grant

You can apply for a SASSA grant in person at your nearest SASSA office or, for the SRD grant, online at srd.sassa.gov.za. When visiting a SASSA office bring your original South African ID document, proof of residence, proof of income (if applicable), and bank account details for payment. For child-related grants you will also need the child's birth certificate and proof of guardianship where applicable.

Processing times vary by grant type — the SRD grant is processed online within a few weeks while other grants may take up to 3 months. Always keep your reference number after applying so you can track your application status online or via the SASSA WhatsApp line on 082 046 8553.
