What is a Bursary and Who Can Apply?
A bursary is financial assistance awarded to students to cover the cost of their studies. Unlike a student loan, a bursary does not need to be repaid — provided you meet the conditions set by the funder, which usually include maintaining a minimum academic average and sometimes committing to work for the sponsoring organisation after graduation.
Most bursaries in South Africa are open to South African citizens or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need and are studying or planning to study at a registered university or TVET college. Some bursaries are merit-based and do not require proof of financial need — these are especially common in engineering, IT, and finance sectors where companies compete to attract top students.
Bursaries vs NSFAS – What is the Difference?
NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is a government-funded bursary scheme specifically for students at public universities and TVET colleges who come from households earning below R350,000 per year. It covers tuition, accommodation, meals, transport, and a personal care allowance. NSFAS applications open in September each year for the following academic year.
Private and corporate bursaries are separate from NSFAS and are offered by companies, government departments, and foundations. These often cover students at any university — public or private — and may include additional benefits like vacation work and guaranteed employment after graduation. You can apply for both NSFAS and a private bursary at the same time as long as the bursary conditions allow it.
